The image of yoga has changed during the past years. If once, the first picture that popped your mind was of a group of white wearing weirdoes standing on their heads and breathing loudly, now you are probably thinking about Madonna’s well shaped arms. Currently, yoga is one of the most popular fitness activities worldwide. One of its appeal is that it can be practiced by elders and it can improve the overall physical fitness of athletes.

If you want to start practicing yoga, here is a quick guide to the basic types of yoga. While most of them are based on the same ancient postures, each yoga style has a different focus. Some of the yoga styles focus on strengthening the body while others focus on flexibility. Other types of yoga focus mainly on breathing, relaxation, and meditation.

Most of the yoga styles that were adopted in the west, were derived from the Hatha Yoga, which is a general term that refers to the physical branches of the ancient Indian philosophy. The purpose of the traditional Hatha Yoga was to achieve balance between mind and body through moral discipline and physical exercises, which are expressed by a series of asana: postures, panorama: breathing and meditation.

Western culture adopted mainly the physical aspects of the Hatha Yoga and ignored the moral aspects, usually even the breathing and meditations aspects. All the yoga styles that were derived from the Hatha Yoga share the same basic principle that mental balance can be achieved through practice of physical exercises and postures. Each yoga style chooses to focus on different aspect.

Ashtanga Yoga:

This focuses on the flow of postures in order to improve strength, stamina and flexibility of the body. During a Asthanga Yoga class, the participants jump from one posture to another. Therefore, this type of yoga is not the ideal for beginners. People who are not well fit may find it too difficult and demanding. However, if you are interested in improving your strength, flexibility and stamina and you are fit enough to deal with an hour of jumping from one posture to another, Asthanga Yoga can suit you.

Power Yoga:

This is an American development of the Asthanga Yoga that also adopted several elements from other types of yoga styles. You can find Power Yoga classes mainly in fitness and health clubs. Power Yoga focuses on strengthening the body by performing Hatha Yoga postures for a longer time to improve both physical flexibility and mental focus. Power Yoga can be a good exercise for athletes, people who practice types of fitness activities and people who want to tone their body.

Bikram Yoga:

A Bikram Yoga class features a series of 26 Hatha Yoga postures practiced in a heated room. It is also known as Hot Yoga. The purpose of the heat is to allow the participants to get into each of the yoga poses in a deeper and safer manner. The heat also helps clean the body from toxins promoting sweating. Bikram Yoga focuses more on the workout of the entire body, including the internal organs and less on flexibility. Bikram Yoga is not recommended to pregnant women and people who suffer from high blood pressure and heart conditions, but it can improve the physical fitness of people who recover from injuries.

Iyengar Yoga:

This focuses on the physical alignment of the body and the accurate performance of each posture. Some of the Iyengar Yoga postures are practiced with the assistance of props such as blocks and belts that are designed to help the participants achieve the most accurate posture and to protect their bodies from injuries. Since the flows between postures are not practiced, Iyengar Yoga classes are less intense and therefore more suitable for people who are less fit. Iyengar Yoga improves body strength and flexibility and can fit people of any age and every physical condition.

Anti-aging Skin Care System Review

An antiaging skin care review will help some but can be confusing.  It is best to consider an anti aging skin care system designed for the individual person.

Things to consider are: No. 1 – The ingredients. Are you allergic to any of the listed ingredients?  What is your natural skin tone?

Maybe some home TV program may have lured you in causing you to think that you were getting a high quality product.  I ordered one too, just so that I could write this anti-aging skin care review.

 I watched as the number of orders go up, I shook my head in frustration.  There is no way for any one to know what this highly advertised anti aging skin care system contains.  You cannot read the list of ingredients.  There is no way to tell if there is any clinical research to support their claims.

However, since I wanted to write this anti aging skin care review, I got out my credit card and ordered the product.  It was a “collagen kit”.  Because, I’ve done my research, I know that most any anti aging skin care system claims to include collagen.  And, since I know a little bit more about it than the average guy, I know that the fibers are usually derived form bovines, or cow hide.

Because my assignment was to provide an anti aging skin care review for this product, I ordered it anyway, at a cost of $78.  You might think of me as a guinea pig.  Better me, than you.

 I received my antiaging skin care system in the mail and I opened it with trepidation.  Finally, I could read the ingredients.  The first ingredient that I noticed was paraffin wax.  It was in the eye treatment and the lip “plumper”.

Any product that contains paraffin wax will feel like chap-stick.  If you put it around your eyes at night, you will wake up with blurred vision and sometimes itchy watering eyes.  That’s because, as you sleep, you rub your eyes, subconsciously.  So far, I have all zeros for my anti-aging skin care review and I haven’t even tried it yet.  I just know a little more than the average consumer, so I’m not looking forward to the negative results.

 I tried the eye cream in the anti aging skin care system, because I wanted to do a complete review.

 As I suspected it felt greasy, sticky and heavy.  It ended up in my eyes over night and I awoke with irritated, swollen eyes.

So, I tried the lip “plumper” in the anti aging skin care system.  I might just have well have bought a tube of Chap Stick and saved the money. But since I was writing an anti aging skin care review, I had to make the effort.  As with Chap Stick, your lips feel better initially, because the wax heals and protects them from further injury.  But, if you use something like this on a regular basis, it will eventually strip away all of the natural oils that your lips contain and they will be dryer than ever.

Resveratrol for Fat Loss

The past couple weeks resveratrol has been all over the news. It’s popularity and the research that has been done on it makes me think if CLA. CLA? You may be thinking “But CLA is a fat and resveratrol is a phytochemical how are they similar?“

The thing is that a lot of the early work (research) on CLA was done in animals (mainly mice/rats). What we found out with more research is that CLA can turn a fat mouse into Mighty Mouse no problem but it doesn’t do the same things in humans. I’m not knocking CLA because studies have shown that it can be an effective agent in the fight against body fat at about 3.5g/day but it hasn’t worked in humans like it does in mice.

I wonder if resveratrol will be similar. Below is a quote from a recent NY Times article:

“Resveratrol has been shown, in mice, to double their endurance They also have a reduced heart rate and energy-charged muscles, just as trained athletes do, according to an article published online in Cell. “Resveratrol makes you look like a trained athlete without the training,” author Dr. Auwerx said in an interview.

If this would work in humans this would be incredible! Right? I’m not going to start celebrating quite yet. Plus another thing to mention is that the dosages of resveratrol that they are giving mice are HUGE compared to the average dose of a resveratrol supplement (for humans). In fact the only company that I’ve found whose product gives a large dose of resveratrol is Rez-V by Biotest. I would guess that if you are looking for the results that they are finding with mice that you would need to take large doses (like they do with mice) and not the small ones found in most supplements.

I’m intrigued by resveratrol. I’m going to start taking it myself. I figure the worst case scenario would be that my health greatly increases. We can sometimes get caught up in all the body composition / performance excitement that has been surrounding resveratrol but forget to realize that resveratrol have been shown to have great health benefits in HUMANS.

And if you’re not into taking the supplement…have a glass of red wine. You’ll get some resveratrol (not nearly as much as if you supplemented), you’ll raise your HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol), but you’ll temporally put a stop to fat burning (nobody said it was a perfect world).
